Oscars Winners That Actually Deserved To Win (Anyway, That’s All I Got)

oscars winners

It’s been a week or two since the Oscars, so we decided to recap some of the winners from this year. Oddly, we all felt relatively satisfied with how things turned out in 2018 (minus one or two categories, but hey, we get into that). Afterward, we go back in time to talk about some films from the past that have won big awards, specifically winners we actually agree with for once.

We’d love to know what some of your favorite Oscar Winners are, and what you thought about this year’s ceremony, plus any topics and ideas you’d like us to discuss in the future!

Cinemaholics Review: A Wrinkle in Time and Thoroughbreds

wrinkle

On the show this week, Will Ashton and I review A Wrinkle in Time, the new Disney family film based on the classic novel. The film opened at around Disney’s box office expectations, second only to Black Panther (which is still breaking records), but it’s become a divisive topic among critics and fans who found the adaptation disappointing while also championing the film’s representation.

For the most part, Will and I are on the same page with Wrinkle. It’s complicated. Later in the show, we take a look at Thoroughbreds, plus we opened this week’s episode with some discussion about the Oscars and ongoing coverage over at SXSW Film Festival. It’s a useful talk if you’re curious about some upcoming genre films set to release in 2018, just remember to take these early film reviews with a grain of salt. The rest of this week’s reviews include Atlanta Season 2, Jessica Jones Season 2, and Will Ashton’s reactions to Love, Simon (which guest Kimber Myers reviewed for us last week).

Question for you: Where do you stand on A Wrinkle in Time?

The Post Hurricane Episode

How many 2016 movies did you mean to watch but never got around to it? In this week’s episode, we discuss movies from last year we only recently saw for the first time. We also talk about movies we rewatched and if our opinions changed at all.

We start all the way back in January 2016 with movies like The Revenant and Kung Fu Panda and finish with the end of year Oscar Nominees like Hidden Figures, Moonlight and La La Land. Continue reading Part-Time Characters: Movies We Missed From 2016

Disney’s LGBT Characters, Logan, and Oscar Fails – Now Conspiring

disney lgbt

With Bridget off duty this week, the lovely Jenny Pan joins us all the way from Canada to talk about the Oscars Fail, Logan and a quick round of Would you Rather? We also discuss Disney’s announcement of Lefou’s sexual orientation in the Beauty and the Beast remake. If that weren’t enough, Sam comments on your comments as some of his impersonations.

Question of the Week: Does it matter at all if the Academy messed up? What do you think of the whole ‘first LGBT character’ in a Disney movie?

Get Out, Rock Dog, & A United Kingdom Review – Cinemaholics

In my new weekly podcast, Cinemaholics, co-host Will Ashton and I finally reviewed Get Out, along with I Don’t Feel At Home In This World AnymoreRock DogFences and A United Kingdom.

We also talked about the Razzies, some news coming out of the DCEU’s Batman and Nightwing movies, and our own version of the Oscars, where we picked our own winners in our own ceremony. Obviously.

Snarcasm: ‘Moana’ Is Formulaic Once You Ignore All Of Its Originality

I correctly predicted that Zootopia would beat out Moana for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars this year. Not because Zootopia deserves it, but because I know an Academy Award winner when I see it, borrowing from the same universe where a socially relevant movie like Spotlight will outshine the crowd-pleasing favorite for Best Picture. Only in this case, Zootopia happens to be a favorite among many Disney fans, as well.
