Does The New Monsters University Short Disprove The Pixar Theory?

As excited as I was about the last Muppets movie, I can’t say I care much about Muppets Most Wanted, a movie with more celebrities than jokes, apparently.

One thing I am excited about, however, is the release of a Monsters University short that premiered at the 2013 D23 Expo and will be shown before Muppets Most Wanted. I’ve been told by some that it includes possible hints at the Pixar Theory (mainly with door technology), so I’m excited to see it all play out for myself.

Here is a quick preview:

It’s not much to go on, but as you can see, the door connects to points within the Monsters’ universe (the fraternity house and the party).

In the theory, I stress how the doors manipulate time, not necessarily dimensions. This is the first time in any of the Monsters Inc. properties that we’ve seen two doors linking within the same time period.

My hypothesis has been that the monsters are actually animals that have mutated and replaced humans thousands of years after the events of Wall-E. The monsters need energy – i.e. humans – to power their world, so they use the magical properties of wood and their advanced technology to travel back in time and harvest energy from past humans.

Monsters University Party CentralThe monsters don’t know they’re traveling back in time in order to preserve the delicate timeline. They’re taught that humans and their belongings are toxic, which is really a precaution against them messing with anything that would change history.

But in this short, we see that the doors are being used for spacial travel, rather than time travel.

Will this disprove the Pixar Theory? We’re going to have to wait and find out. Discuss!

  1. I’ve been lucky enough to see this already – it’s not what you think…

Also Muppets Most Wanted is well worth a watch.

  2. If you use the door to travel through time, what is to say that the other time zone is the present?

    • That’s what I was thinking. That the other person could simply travel through the door to a time were they would arrive at the house.
For example, if the person were to take 5 minutes to go the house, they simply travel 5 minutes through the door, then manipulating themselves to have there existence align with time and space.

Nevertheless, you must understand space to understand time.

      • The reason why that’s wrong is because of the fact that Mike and Sully are communicating through the walkie talkies. You can’t make radiowaves travel through time.

          • I think the doors are merely prototypes from a museum that they “borrowed” and only travel through space not time. This is believable because museum security is less than mu or monsters inc.

    • well the party is clearly not in the oozma kappa house as the party area is much to big. also if that is a radio mike is using, radio waves cant travel back in time,

    • they go to a…

      IN..
      3…
      2…

      O…
present (99% sure that’s the time) house into another door which was set up at the … i’m gonna say frap… house

  3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xKfRfRmuOQ Look at this preview. It seems as if this person has two closet doors, or monsters can travel through any door in a house. They also pick up the doors and move them while they are still powered. The only way for them to power a door is with energy. Remember how Boo laughed loud enough to power every door in the entire factory? Also, they were traveling through doors in the chase scene with Randall. And in this preview (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2R0CUnloLNo) they powered on a door INSIDE THE HOUSE. They must have an explanation for that. But in the other preview, it still doesn’t disprove the Pixar Theory. Thank goodness!

    • plus the zero-point energy theory from the Incredibles universe could also be used here. They used a door from a house in the “peak of humanity”. And the unseen energy in a vacuum could be coherent with the screams or laughter energy. Since the both doors are in a couples bedroom not a kids bedroom, Outside of the theory aspect into a more realistic view, most married couples should have sex at least once a week. That being said laughter and/or screaming is potential in this area,I would not be surprised if the doors made of wood were drawing the zero-point energy, from clears throat sex-sounds.

  4. Maybe the doors link through time and space, meaning the door in the short could be one that links to a different point in space, but not in time, meaning they arrive at the party at the exact same time they leave.

    • Yes–in the chase scene in “Monsters, Inc.”, Mike and Sulley go to Paris and Japan, among other places, in UNDER 5 MINUTES OF SCREEN TIME! I don’t think Paris and Japan were or will ever be in the same place, regardless of the amount of years we’re talking about.

  5. Those are sincerely great insights! It gave me something to think about. 🙂

    • It could also be stated that if the doors that the monsters are using in the preposed ‘future’ allow them to travel through time. Then the doors they are using could be the actual doors they are traveling back to. Meaning the doors they are using are the future version of the doors being travled to. Wood has always been rumored to have a inherit magical property of its own. So why would the door made of wood not be able to hold and sustain the energy and memorys of the people of whom have been around it he most. Allowing the line to be created for the mosters to travel back to when the energy and memories were present. This link could be what allows the technologie to interact with the magical propertys of the doors (wood) and create the window to travel back. In contrast to Boo’s supposed magic which doesnt have the tech to guide it which is why she randomly jumps searching for the time period in which Sully existed. While the door that was used to travel in the short is made from wood of a tree that only existed in the monsters time period causeing the tech to circumvent the time travel and only travel through space.
I hope this all makes sense. Love to hear what you think.

  7. I think that it’s only a specific kind of wood that works. All of the specific trees that had magical effects– in Up, WALL-E, and A Bug’s Life– looked very similar, as the author himself pointed out. It is only this species of tree that can be made into time-traveling doors and inspire people, probably because of extra magic. Doors made of any other kind of wood just act like the regular doors humans have now. This is also why this kind was the last surviving plant life in WALL-E; the magic makes it hardier. Who knows, perhaps it goes far enough that civilization wouldn’t have been able to rebuild if any other kind of tree had survived.

  8. What if they are going to a party from the past? I know it’s probally not the case but it would make sence.

  9. The door has to successfully transport you to a different place first in order for it to have any hope of traveling through time. Since the Earth revolves around the sun, and our solar system revolves around the center of the galaxy, the Earth has never been at this point in space before. (and never will be again) So it’d probably be simple to travel to a different room with an insignificant amount of actual time traveled.

  10. okay.So what does the walking lamp mean in the pixar meaning the opening pixar where the lamp actually jumps on the i in pixar. So the machines actually are alive for a lot more time then we think.Sorry if i am wrong i just stumbled upon this thought.

    • The radio waves of the walkietalkies don’t travel through the door though. The waves travel through present time, where both Mike and Sulley are.

  11. Just because they (mis)use it for spacial travel doesn’t have to mean it’s disproving the theory, maybe it could lead to an eventual corruption in the chronology and lead to a whole new story… hey, it could happen.

  12. I’ve seen the rest of the short and they still travail through time to the present

  13. Well the doors have to manipulate time anyway. In the movie all the doors are in a line, that’s not how kids wardrobes actually are. They’d have to be have to manipulate both time and space.

  14. but Jon, couldn’t they have made special door that connect just to they’re time?

  15. maby there going to a door thats at the same time as the other door

  16. Simple solution (with a fun back story). The doors in Monster’s Inc get their “date stamp” from the moment they become sentient. As a result two doors made from the same tree would always go back to the same point in time and always be the shortest distancr possible from one another.

Lastly, this would also explain why the Witch had so many carvings to sell in Brave. She travelled back on a old tree and the only trees she’d find there would be to old ti get back to her “present.”

Lastly, she’d be very likely to find a tree from a time we’d call pre-historic in a land like that. To bad Pixar doesn’t have anything with Dinosaurs in the works…

  17. I forgot to mark the boxes for notification. Curious to see if anyone has any comments on that theory.

  18. Dude. You could be on one of those mind blowing shows on the science channel. I’m at a loss for words, you sir are Turkey amazing.

    • Dang auto correct, Turkey should be truly =)

  19. Great to hear! Thanks for always being so responsive. I am a loyal IDX subscriber as well!

  20. I have something you can add in your theory! In the part you say “which is really a precaution against them messing with anything that would change history” also if you remember in the movie they only scary kids of certain age, so they don’t remember that real monsters came from their closets. I think this is mindbowning!

  21. This is also a part of the Pixar Theory because they are time traveling. They go into a human house in the past and use another door to get back.

  22. Well, the prequel monsters university only used it in the movie to travel to the human world from the monster world and vice versa so it may be safe to say that the pixar theory is still intact
