The year is half over, but weirdly enough we’ve already THREE Marvel films now with Ant-Man and the Wasp. Of course, this is the last MCU film of 2018, so enjoy that revolving logo while you can. This week on Cinemaholics, I’m joined by special “recurring” guests Kimber Myers and Alisha Grauso, filling in for Will and Maveryke while they enjoy their vacations.

We kicked things off with a conversation about some of our favorite movies of 2018 so far, then later we talked about Sorry to Bother You, Hotel Transylvania 3, GLOW Season 2 on Netflix, and a few more releases.

Incredibles 2 Review: Not Every Pixar Movie Can Be Super

From my official review of Incredibles 2 on The Young Folks:

These are the clearest shortcomings of Incredibles 2, as it fails to be as strong an ensemble piece as The Incredibles, where every main character (even the villain) had a defined, cohesive arc. But in virtually every other respect, Incredibles 2 is just as wonderful, gorgeous, and thrilling as the first, to the point where most super fans of the original likely won’t care about these flaws.

Overall, I liked the movie. It even exceeded some of my expectations, particularly with some of the clever writing surrounding the infant Jack Jack and how he creatively factors into the super family’s heroic antics.

This week, we handed the podcast over to an all-female cast of awesome film lovers to review Hereditary and Ocean’s 8. Kimber Myers hosts this week with special guest Alisha Grauso and newcomer to the pod Candice Frederick, and they kick things off with a lively conversation about the year’s breakout horror hit from A24, plus the spinoff to the Ocean’s 11 franchise starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, and many more.

For mini reviews, Kimber and Alisha discuss Upgrade, the sci-fi action darling we did our for our feature review last week, and then Won’t You Be My Neighbor, the Fred Rogers documentary that has been warming the hearts of even the coldest critics.

Cinemaholics Review – Solo: A Star Wars Story

Special guest Catrina Dennis joins the podcast this week to help us unpack the latest Star Wars anthology prequel, Solo: A Star Wars Story. It’s a movie with just as much drama taking place outside the context of the movie, with production problems galore and an unfolding narrative surrounding its underperformance at the box office as of opening weekend. But as for the movie itself, we chat at length about whether or not it’s simply “fine” or perhaps a bit better than some are giving it credit.

We only did a few mini reviews, but the first one absolutely makes up for it. Maveryke and I go on a tear about 13 Reasons Why Season 2, now on Netflix. Will talks about the new Adult Swim show he can’t stop watching, Joe Pera Talks With You, and I finish things out with my tribute to New Girl in light of its series finale.

Deadpool 2 Is About The Problem With Fandom (Spoilers)

The first Deadpool was a parody of the superhero genre, and so is Deadpool 2 in a lot of ways. But watching the movie recently, I came away with the conclusion that this sequel is more about the superhero genre’s fans, lampooning us and our expectations going into these summer franchise flicks.

To explain this, I took to my trusty YouTube Channel Jon In Theory the other day and rambled into a microphone. It’s not the shortest video, but hopefully some of you will find it interesting. This is less of a review and more of a spoiler analysis from the perspective of someone a bit mixed on the film.

The Chronicles of Wade Wilson continue in Deadpool 2, the follow-up to what I once considered a true breath of fresh air for superhero franchises everywhere. Like the original, Deadpool 2 is R-rated, edgy, and almost painfully self-aware, nothing like most comic book flicks today. I certainly got a kick out of the movie, but I don’t think I’m as in love with the concept of this franchise as I was at first sight. To help me unpack my mixed feelings, special guest Brandon Katz from Observer joins the show with regular cohosts Will Ashton and Maveryke Hines.

Question for you: How many times have you seen the first Deadpool, and did you like it more or less the second time?

2018 Movie Power Rankings

Oh, how time flies. This is my fourth year doing these “power rankings,” so most of you know the drill. I’ve watched enough movies at this point in the year to unveil my rankings, and I’ll continue to update this list as I watch more films until the end of December.

One notable difference this year is that I’ve cut down a bit on written reviews on this site, so the best way to find out what I think of these flicks beyond a letter grade is by checking out past and present episodes of Cinemaholics. I also keep up with everything on my Letterboxd (a social network for filmgoers).
