We’re back! And we decided to come back in a nostalgic, whimsical way by discussing the movies we watched with our families. Special guest Guy Simons joins us to reminisce about the viewing experiences we’ve had with various family members and how that compares with what we watch now.

It’s obviously a very nostalgic episode filled to the brim with tangents and bad jokes (mostly by Sam). We talk about The Birdcage, Big Fish, Point Break, Planet of the Apes, and plenty more with special guest Guy Simons. Cinemaholics Review: Isle of Dogs and Pacific Rim Uprising

Wes Anderson’s new film Isle of Dogs is a stop-motion comedy akin to his 2009 film, Fantastic Mr. Fox. With me on the podcast this week is Maveryke Hines to discuss the movie and some of the surrounding controversy. We had an honest, thoughtful discussion without giving away spoilers, of course.

Afterward, we reviewed Pacific Rim Uprising, the long-awaited sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 fan favorite, this time directed by Steven S. DeKnight. I spoke briefly about Blockers, a new comedy set to release in the coming weeks. And to finish this short episode, I talked about Season 1 of Barry on HBO, which just premiered and stars Bill Hader as a contract killer who decides to balance his hitman life with acting classes. Trust me, it’s good.

Cinemaholics Review: Tomb Raider and Love, Simon

I’ve been as busy as ever this week, so it surprises even me that I managed to catch both Tomb Raider and Love, Simon in time for this episode of Cinemaholics. We even managed to catch The Death of Stalin, Love Season 3, and some others. Despite a packed episode, this discussion comes in at just under an hour for once.

The featured event is Tomb Raider, which is admittedly right up my wheelhouse for two reasons: my love of action adventure and most certainly the 2013 video game reboot this new film is based on. I’m also a fan of Alicia Vikander, so what could go wrong? Well, listen and find out. Our discussion certainly livened up a bit, though, over Love, Simon, which I can declaratively say is a new favorite of the year.

It’s been a week or two since the Oscars, so we decided to recap some of the winners from this year. Oddly, we all felt relatively satisfied with how things turned out in 2018 (minus one or two categories, but hey, we get into that). Afterward, we go back in time to talk about some films from the past that have won big awards, specifically winners we actually agree with for once.

Cinemaholics Review: A Wrinkle in Time and Thoroughbreds

On the show this week, Will Ashton and I review A Wrinkle in Time, the new Disney family film based on the classic novel. The film opened at around Disney’s box office expectations, second only to Black Panther (which is still breaking records), but it’s become a divisive topic among critics and fans who found the adaptation disappointing while also championing the film’s representation.

For the most part, Will and I are on the same page with Wrinkle. It’s complicated. Later in the show, we take a look at Thoroughbreds, plus we opened this week’s episode with some discussion about the Oscars and ongoing coverage over at SXSW Film Festival. It’s a useful talk if you’re curious about some upcoming genre films set to release in 2018, just remember to take these early film reviews with a grain of salt. This week, we decided to have a laid-back discussion about our guilty pleasure movies: the movies we kind of like, but don’t want to admit it. It’s a free-flowing conversation, basically, and a chance for us hosts to learn a lot more about each other’s tastes and…weaknesses?

Cinemaholics Review: Red Sparrow and Love, Simon

Special guests Mae Abdulbaki and Kimber Myers joined the show this week to help us review Red Sparrow, a new spy thriller starring Jennifer Lawrence and Joel Edgerton, directed by Francis Lawrence (no relation). Of course, Maveryke Hines and Will Ashton were also on the show, so we had a full panel to discuss what turned out to be a painfully bad film, at least in my opinion. We also opened the show with some light discussion about the 2018 Oscars.

We certainly had more positive things to say about some of the films and shows in our Mini Reviews. To start us off, Kimber shared her thoughts on Love, Simon, a new teen romantic comedy about “coming out.” Maveryke and I gave a passionate plea for listeners to start binging Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on Netflix, especially now that Season 3 has landed. Will talked us through a new British comedy called The Party, which should be on your radar. And I did my best to articulate my complicated thoughts on the new Netflix original series Everything Sucks!
