I’ve never been the biggest fan of the prequel trilogy beginning with Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but I do enjoy them as one of the better franchises available on the occasional summer. Joining me to discuss and review the final entry (for now), Will Ashton and Maveryke Hines share their own take on the long, fascinating tale that is most impressive for its motion-capture work featuring Andy Serkis than pretty much anything else.
We also did a feature review for The Big Sick, one of my favorite movies of 2017 so far and a true delight for fans of romantic comedies and really comedies in general. It’s a great discussion that we’ve been patiently waiting to have since last month. Our mini reviews this week include Lady Macbeth, A Ghost Story, and The Standups.
The original Spider-Man and its sequel Spider-Man 2 essentially molded my taste in superhero movies. So it’s no surprise we spent a longer amount of time than usual dissecting Spider-Man: Homecoming, which has received high ratings from critics and audiences everywhere.
Special guest Mae Abdulbaki joined the discussion between me, Will Ashton, and Maveryke Hines this week. In addition to The Young Folks, Mae writes for Heroic Hollywood, where Will and I used to contribute (myself as DC Editor last year). It was a great to have her on for a reunion, especially when she gave us a brief mini review of The Big Sick.
Speaking of which, we also talked about Castlevania, a new anime series produced by Netflix which is streaming now. And I finally got a chance to share my love of The Beguiled, a remake of the 1971 Clint Eastwood film starring Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, and Kirsten Dunst.
Over July 4th weekend, I got together with the rest of the Cinemaholics crew to chat about Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver at length. For those of you who’ve already read my review, it should come as no surprise that I adored the film. But as always, Will and Maveryke provided some nuance of their own to whether or not this film is as good as the critics are saying.
We started off the show with a spirited discussion about Edgar Wright’s filmography and which ones are our favorites. And of course we spared some time later in the show to talk about some other big movies you might want to check out. We covered Despicable Me 3 and Okja, mainly, while also touching on my (finally) viewing of Captain Underpants and Maveryke’s current obsession with Bojack Horseman.
Full disclosure: I was very tired during this latest episode of Cinemaholics, and you can clearly hear it in my voice. For fun, simply imagine that it’s my disdain for Transformers: The Last Knight fueling my weariness and it should sound just fine.
Maveryke and I are joined this week by CJ Mellon from That Kind of Nerdpodcast. You may remember CJ from his guest appearance on Now Conspiring last fall, when we discussed the best and worst movies of 2016 (or maybe just the summer?) Unfortunately, Will Ashton is out this week due to scheduling conflicts.
Fortunately, our Mini Reviews were a bit more lighthearted than our featured discussion of Transformers. We talked about GLOW, the new show on Netflix starring Alison Brie, which is about the “gorgeous ladies of wrestling” in the 1980s. Highly recommend now that I’ve seen a few episodes myself. CJ shares his love of iZombie and speaks briefly on Season 3 without spoiling anything. And I gave a sneak peak review of Friends from College, another new Netflix show premiering on July 14th. I’m still working my way through the season, but it’s a solid recommendation.

I’ve spent the last seven days or so talking about Cars 3, Cars, and Pixar in general, but my recent sit-down with Will Ashton and Kayla Savage on Cinemaholics was a true highlight. We reviewed Cars 3, of course, but we also spent a considerable amount of time discussing the Cars franchise as a whole and why it’s Pixar’s most controversial brand.
We also shared our thoughts on two big movies that released this week: 47 Meters Down and Rough Night. Will Ashton saw the former and Kayla Savage and I saw the latter. Hopefully, you’ll appreciate our newly titled segment at the beginning of the episode, “But Our Emails,” where we took a few minutes to read your messages over the last few weeks.

I’m still working on putting the mental pieces of my brain back together after sitting through The Mummy, and strangely enough, I’m almost as equally confused about It Comes At Night, A24’s would-be horror classic beloved by critics and ravaged by just about everyone else. Luckily, I had plenty of help on the show this week to navigate these new films and then some.
We finally managed to lasso in Andy Herndon from The D-Cast for the “Mummy” segment of this week’s episode. True, we brought him in for something completely removed from Disney (which he of course pointed out with sharp irony), but as expected, we had a great conversation and will have him back again soon.
This week on Cinemaholics, I’m joined by special guest Kayleigh Donaldso, writer for ScreenRant and Pajiba. We talked about Wonder Woman, of course, and had a spirited discussion about the state of the DCEU and how we’d rank the movies so far.
Will Ashton was on the show as well to talk about Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, which I unfortunately had to miss this weekend. But I did get a chance to share my thoughts on the first season of Riverdale (finally), and Maveryke Hines tried to convince me to finally catch up on House of Cards now that Season 5 is out.
