The True Identity of Andy’s Mom In ‘Toy Story’ May Blow Your Mind

Andy's Mom

It all started with a hat.

Several months ago, one of my anonymous Pixar Theory Interns (that’s a thing on a resume) came to me with a crazy proposition: Andy’s mom is Emily, Jessie’s previous owner.

I laughed. I then agreed.

For some time, I compiled all of the evidence and found some incredible support for this theory. For one thing, take a close look at Andy’s cowboy hat he frequently wears in the movies:

Andy's Hat

Here’s another close look:

Andy's Hat

As you can see, Andy’s hat is noticeably different from Woody’s. Why is this? Why wouldn’t Andy want to wear a hat that closely resembles the one worn by his favorite toy?

It’s no secret that Andy has a close connection with Woody. In Toy Story 2, his mom (who we only know as Ms. Davis) mentions that Woody is an old family toy.

Remember that Woody doesn’t even recall that he is a collector’s item – a toy made in the 1950s. This is a deviation from other toys who know full well where they come from. It’s possible that Woody doesn’t know because he’s been in Andy’s family for a long time, possibly belonging to his father.

But we need more evidence. Take a close look at Jessie’s hat:

Andy's Hat

Ah, this hat looks familiar. It’s the same red hat with white lace that Andy wears. The only difference is that Jessie’s hat has a white lace around the center. But look at Andy’s hat again.

Andy's Hat

There’s a faded mark where the white lace should be. Why do you think that is? And what does Jessie have to do with this?

(Bob Saget’s voice) Kids, you remember the story of Jessie. Her owner Emily grew up with her, much the same way as Andy. She was incredibly loved, but Emily eventually gave her away when she grew older. Jessie ended up in storage for a long time, as confirmed by her in the movie when she has a literal panic attack over having to go back.

Now, take a close look at what’s on this bed in Emily’s room:

Andy's Hat

That is a hat that looks extremely similar to, you guessed it, Andy’s. The room is also pretty old-fashioned, leaving room for this to take place years before Andy was born.

In fact, you can clearly tell that this isn’t modern day with shots like these:

Andy's Hat

The only difference between the hat that Emily wears throughout this sequence and Andy’s hat is an extra white lace around the center, which is visibly missing from Andy’s hat. Otherwise, the hats are identical.

Also, in the donation box that Emily puts Jessie in, we don’t see the hat. We do see other remnants of her connection with Jessie, but the hat is noticeably absent. The box isn’t even big enough to hold it. So Emily held onto that hat…and maybe passed it on to her child, who would grow to also love a cowboy doll.

We never get a closeup of Emily’s face, but we do see that she has light, auburn hair as a teenager. Also, it is very short.

Compared to:

500full

The middle picture is closest to the strawberry blonde color we see when Emily is young. It’s perfectly reasonable to assume that her hair lightened as she aged, which is clearly the case in these photos (or she could have dyed it).

Here’s what we know for sure:

We don’t know the first name of Andy’s mom. We don’t know Emily’s last name. We know that Andy’s hat and Emily’s hat are the same. We know that Emily is old enough to be Andy’s mom. We definitely know that Pixar is perfectly capable of sneaking this in without being overt about it.

You may be wondering how the two characters could be the same if Emily was willing to give Jessie up so easily, while Andy was far more hesitant.

Actually, the scenarios are quite similar. Andy forgot about Woody as he grew up too, despite their strong connection. Andy even gave Woody away, albeit in a different manner than Emily.

In the end, it makes perfect sense that these two concurrent stories are so similar because they’re related by blood. It’s also a freak of destiny that Jessie would one day belong to her owner’s son, though we never get to see the mom’s reaction to seeing Jessie again.

She was probably indifferent and believed it to be a different version of the same toy. How would you respond if you saw your child with a toy that looked like one that you had as a kid? Your first assumption probably wouldn’t be that they’re the exact same toy.

What do you think? Do you believe that the two characters are the same and that Andy’s mom/Emily found redemption through the love her son had for the toy she left behind? Or, do you hate fun, love, and destiny? Let me know.

    • Watching toy story 2, when Emily’s song is playing, Jessie is under the bed. There’s an old woodeny looking toy car that’s under her bed… It is the same old toy car Andy’s mum picks up for the yard sale under Andy’s bed!!

  10. This is really fascinating and interesting.
I was wondering what do you think of the Jessie doll on Boo’s bed in Monsters Inc?
Is Boo Emily(would it change the idea that Boo is the witch in Brave?)?
    Please keep these theories coming.
    Ilaria

    • I think in the Monsters Inc. Movie there is a short clip where you can see a piece of paper in Boo’s room where it says her actual name… I think it was like Mary or something similar… Though Pixar does like to throw little easter eggs into their movies… Ex: the sully carving in Brave, Doug the Dog is in another movie as a shadow though I can’t remember which one, Jessie in Monsters Inc., even Sid from Toy Story makes a reappearance as the garbage man in TS3 (if that counts)

      • Really?I have to watch it again,TS3 to see Sid.
Yesterday I watched Frozen again,to see if the pizza truck would somehow be in there(not) but instead a saw two bear carvings from Brave on the desk in the shop/sauna in the forest(sorry, nothing to do with Andy’smum).

        • Frozen is not a Pixar movie. So there will be no references to the other Pixar movies in it. Those bears weren’t the ones from Brave. They were just bears. There was however a hidden Mickey in that very scene. Check out one of the shelves as Anna is looking around the store while talking to Oaken. There is a Mickey doll with red pants sitting there.

    • No, it probably isn’t the exact same toy.

  11. Another interesting thing to note is how Andy came to know Jessie’s name. When he first sees her Toy Story 2 he calls her Bazooka Jane. But then in Toy Story 3, he knows that her name is Jessie. If, indeed, Andy’s mom owned Jessie, then she would know Jessie’s real name and be able to inform Andy of it. Otherwise, how else would Andy learn Jessie’s name?

  12. Yeah sorry I just can’t buy this one and for a simple reason, the time period. Emily was a little girl in the 50’s, a teen in the 60’s and that would make her a mom in the 70’s or 80’s. Being a child of the 70’s I can say with all confidence that Andy’s childhood was not portrayal of that time period. But more of my own children’s growing years of the 90’s and 2000’s.
That point is proven with the bedrooms of both Emily and Andy along with key places in the movie like Pizza Planet.
That being said Emily would have remembered her own childhood toys, don’t you? Especially from her growing years from when children didn’t have 100’s of cheap and forgettable toys like the do in the current generation (don’t believe me ask anyone who was born and grew up in the 50’s & 60’s they will tell you every toy they had in their formitave years- I know my Mom does and even I can list her toys she has told me the stories so many times)
That all being said they never really went into Emily’s story, if she had a brother and their parents got them companion toys from the very popular Woody’s Round Up TV show, this would make more sense.
Now let me take a flight of fancy here for a second, if Emily had a brother and Woody was his (making Woody an important family heirloom) and considering the time period in which Emily grew up it is very possible that Emily’s brother would have been shipped out to Vietman and even had died. Either way Emily before hand gets rid of Jesse her own toy but at the loss of her brother keeps his toy Woody doll in order to keep some sort of innocent alive in a very crazy world. Emily (or her brother) then in time becomes a parent and still holding on to the Woody doll waits to give it to their own child but instead of having a boy they have a girl Andy’s mom. Than years later upon receiving the first boy born into the family, Andy the very special family toy is finally given to the grandson.

    • my parents were born in the mid 50s, didn’t have kids until the late 80s. Considering the first Toy Story movie came out in 1995, Andy is I think 6 in the first movie, making him born in the late 80s (at the outside).
The grandparent timeline is I think more of a stretch than the parent timeline.

      • Andy graduated in 2010, so he was born in the early 90s

  15. Having read this I believed it was very enlightening. I appreciate
you spending some time and energy to put this article together.
I once again find myself spending a significant amount of time
both reading and posting comments. But so what, it was still worth it!

    • Assess the situation – there are different degrees of negativity.
We want our customers to find us approachable and easy
to deal with. This is also one of the cost-effective ways of promotion of web
      business with structured approach and dedicated participation. That’s $100-$300; $250-$750;
or $500-$1500 a week to maintain your following list.

Today, it is not easy to control dilapidating reputation in the market due to some negative comments.

Many businesses have caught onto the fact that marketing with social media is a terrific venue through which you can advertise your product or service and reach out to
a global audience. If you are using ads then you definitely should be testing.

Moreover it’s becoming a supplemental service offering among web developers, SEO specialists
and ecommerce experts and advisers. If you think
social networking is for teenagers and for people with too much time on their hands, think
again. “You need to rely on each other for support,” he says.

  16. Very rapidly this web page will be famous among all
blogging viewers, due to it’s fastidious articles

  17. After reading this I can’t believe how well all the pieces fit. I also have a bit of info as to how old Woody might be. In Toy Story 2 when Woody is in Al’s apartment checking out all the stuff with his name and face all over it he comes across a record player and mentions he hasn’t seen one in ages. Even though record players were used for decades they would have been more popular in the 50’s and 60’s.

  18. well i don’t think that jessie belong to andy’s mom because jessie and woody don’t know each other and if woody been in the family for a long time, there from the same time that those toys where selling, andy’s mom like that line of toys and being a cowgirl then it would make prefect sense that she would had have woody to

    • Maybe woody belonged to Andy’s dad, after all Andy’s min says she can’t sell woody because he’s an ‘old family toy’ (TS2)

  19. There are still dozens of other products from which to choose.

Most Section 8 tenants will avoid doing anything which will jeopardize.
However, the prices of the real estate in heavily populated areas can be very expensive.
Though investing in residential and commercial real estate has
several similarities but there are still some critical differences which one
should know if you want to succeed in the deals.
So you only have one question left to ask, which idea are you going to implement.
The high-end properties have powerful demand among real estate investors, especially in the most desirable areas, such as Paris.
Ideas of support charges and panic comply with: ‘have I been paying all those rents in earlier a long time.
And I cop to that, it certainly is–but is our relationship with these
legal fictions, these dollar-bots that endanger our culture and our
society, any saner or more practical. Don’t be lured by a low estimate
from a contractor whose reputation is less than stellar.
This is because of the up to date infrastructures and
amenities surrounding them just like clean environment, connected roads,
better transport, great accessibility and lots more.

Healthy clear beautiful skin is a must for models because bad skin does not photograph well.

  21. An exercise program that suits your body type and requirement will be designed for you.

As a dieter, if you come across a particular flavour
or herbal tea type that you especially fall in love with, you can easily continue consuming it after the
completion of your diet without having to worry about its effects on your health.
You will again get a well toned body with perfect curves and shapes.
