2017 Fall Movie Preview — Cinemaholics

When we first sat down to list out our most anticipated fall movies for this Cinemaholics episode, I expected there’d be too many to count. In a way that’s true (we had to list out some honorable mentions, and even that wasn’t enough to cover everything), but I do think we’ve narrowed things down to a preview of films you should have your eye on.

And to make things easier, we inadvertently stuck with “categories” for our picks. I have some franchise films, Will Ashton chose a bunch of indie comedies, and Maveryke Hines stuck with horror for the most part. For obvious reasons, we don’t go into much detail about Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which barely makes the cutoff anyway. Needless to say, we’re all going to check that one out.

So sit back and enjoy this list of Fall movies we plan on checking out over the next few months. And for those of you who voted for us to do this type of episode in our Twitter poll, thanks for helping out your fellow Cinemaholics.

Good Time and Death Note Review — Cinemaholics

I didn’t have enough time this week to do a formal review of Good Time, but our most recent episode of Cinemaholics sums up my thoughts pretty well. We also tackled Death Note, the Netflix Original Movie based on the anime series. It started out as a mini review, but Will Ashton and I went on for so long talking about it, the review hit feature length. We also talked about Leap! and Brigsby Bear.

This episode debuted our first ever “On Tap” segment. I interviewed Kayleigh Donaldson of Pajiba, and we unpacked the massive Handbook for Mortals controversy surrounding a YA book that supposedly cheated its way to the New York Times Bestseller List, perhaps to shore up a movie deal. Logan Lucky…Was That Supposed To Be Funny? — Cinemaholics

Special guest Andy Herndon from The D-Cast came on Cinemaholics this week for a spirited discussion about Steven Soderbergh’s new film, the rural heist “comedy” Logan Lucky. Of course, we also found time to dig into some other notable films, including The Hitman’s Bodyguard, Wind River (one of my favorite movies of the summer), and The Glass Castle.

Will Ashton and Maveryke Hines were also on the show this week, and we had a bit of a debate going on around Logan Lucky in particular. We also got some closure on Will’s opinion of Annabelle: Creation early on in the show, and Mav and I talked about a couple of shows we’ve been watching this week, including Marvel’s The Defenders Season 1 on Netflix.

Cinemaholics Review: Annabelle: Creation

On this latest episode of Cinemaholics, I sat down with Maveryke Hines to review Annabelle: Creation, the new horror film out of “The Conjuring universe.” We also had a great conversation about our favorite horror films and started things off with a trailer breakdown of mother!, the upcoming Darren Aronofsky film.

Our conversation is spoiler-free up until the 40 minute mark, but after that is fair game. And I want to take a moment to mention a few podcasts we plugged this week that we encourage you to check out if you’re a fan of Cinemaholics.

Many of you already know and love Part-Time Characters since it’s hosted on this website. But we also mentioned The Legendarium Podcast, a fantastic resources for fans of fantasy books and the occasional movie review. I recently guested on their show to talk about The Dark Tower, and it was definitely time well spent.

Who Was ‘The Dark Tower’ Made For? — Cinemaholics

“Stephen King is obviously one of the most prolific writers of all time,” said Will Ashton on the latest episode of Cinemaholics, where we reviewed The Dark Tower and discussed at length why and how this movie confounds us. The show opened with a quick aside about our favorite Stephen King film adaptations, and as some of you might have predicted, I had some not-so-popular opinions to express about The Shining.

We covered a few extra movies in a shorter episode this week (our originally recorded episode with extended cast was unfortunately lost to the audio oblivion), including Lady Macbeth and Detroit. We’ve talked about both movies in previous episodes, but now we’ve all seen both and were able to share notes on two of the most impressive films in 2017. And Will capped the episode off with a mini review for Girls Trip, setting off a great discussion about summer comedies.

Atomic Blonde, The Defenders, Ozark, and Detroit — Cinemaholics

We had a special guest join us this week to help review Atomic Blonde. You might remember Robert Yaniz Jr. from our Alien: Covenant episode a few months back, but he also hosts his own entertainment podcast, Crooked Table. Robert gave us an early spoiler-free review of The Defenders Season 1, as well, which premieres August 18th on Netflix.

Will Ashton was out this week on vacation, but Maveryke Hines and myself came back to cover Ozark, Detroit, To The Bone, and The Incredible Jessica James. We also introduced a new segment we’d love your feedback on: “Would you even watch this?” The rules are simple: one of us describes the trailer for an obscure movie as a pitch for the other person to go see it. Let’s see if we can do a better job hyping up audiences than the actual marketing for these movies (probably not).

Is Christopher Nolan’s ‘Dunkirk’ Really A Masterpiece? — Cinemaholics

Usually on Cinemaholics, we stick to covering one featured movie and leaving the rest for “mini reviews.” But for the second week in a row, the summer release schedule disagreed with us, so Will Ashton, Maveryke Hines, and I reviewed both Dunkirk and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets this week.

This was a more contentious episode than usual, with most of us differing quite a bit on both of these movies, particularly Valerian. If you’re at all interested in seeing either of these films, our conversation might prove useful.

Just two Mini Reviews this week: Aftermath (starring Arnold Schwarzenegger) and Colossal (starring Anne Hathaway). The latter is a film I saw just this week as a blind buy on Will Ashton’s recommendation.
