‘Incredibles 2’ Just Premiered: Here Are The First Reactions

Pixar’s Incredibles 2 premiered in Hollywood last night, which means the social media reactions are already rolling in. The embargo for Incredibles 2 doesn’t lift for most critics until Monday, and I won’t see the movie myself until tomorrow (Update: saw it, agree with a lot of stuff below), so if you can’t wait until then, here are the earliest (spoiler-free) takes.

Let’s start with the most positive:

INCREDIBLES 2 is easily Pixar’s best sequel since TOY STORY 3.

Pixar did a fantastic job taking the qualities of the Parr family from the first film and building upon that in this film.

Heads up, Jack Jack steals this whole movie. #Incredibles2

#Incredibles2 is such a friggin delight! Family dynamic is brilliant yet again but WOW is Jack Jack a scene stealer. And that score! More A+ work from Michael Giacchino that I’m gonna need to own.

Of course, not everyone is completely gushing. A few critics who liked Incredibles 2 overall have a few caveats, especially when it comes to how predictable the story is.

I adored #Incredibles2 however- it is lacking in any diversity (Frozone & 1 other super doesn’t equal diversity) that it knocked it down a notch for me.

Pixar is a huge influence on kids, the fact that they don’t reflect society & its many beautiful colors, is a huge disservice.

Just saw #Incredibles2! Not the most surprising story ever, but the journey is a blast, with charming and silly moments. And the visuals and the Giacchino score are… incredible.

Just walked out of #Incredibles2. It improves on practically everything from the original. Its visual style is stunning to look at, the characters are fantastic, and the adventure is a blast.

I haven’t come across any outright negative reactions (yet), but at least one critic claims Incredibles 2 isn’t as good as the original, a take I predict we’ll see plenty more of in the coming days and weeks.

#incredibles2⁠ ⁠is a serviceable sequel, a fun adventure but not on the same level of the original. Jack Jack & Edna steal the show, (please tell me they are making a short film with Edna babysitting Jack Jack). Fantastic production design, another great score by @m_giacchino.

UPDATE: Here’s where I’m at:

#Incredibles2 is funnier than the original, just as pure fun, and has a clearer message this time with some decent resolution. But I struggle to say it’s overall better or worse, and at the moment, I don’t really care. Just go see it and have a great time adoring Jack Jack.
