Today at the D23 expo in Anaheim, John Lasseter (Disney CCO) broke the news to CNBC what will be going down for Pixar’s next film in the Toy Story franchise.
Lasseter: It’s a love story with Woody and – and this is news – Bo Peep… At Pixar and at Disney, we only make sequels if we come up with a story that’s as good or better than the original. That’s our rule. We don’t do things just to print money.
Guys, I’m stoked. As many of you are aware, I’ve speculated about Bo Peep’s destiny a lot in the past, so it’s great to hear that Pixar is opening the pages to that story. And it will be even better if Annie Potts reprises her role as the porcelain lamp.
John Lasseter and Josh Cooley (story artist for Inside Out) will be helming Toy Story 4, which is being written by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack.
Something bears repeating, by the way. The story idea for Toy Story 4 came directly from John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter, and Lee Unkrich. This isn’t B team. I know you might be a little wary about Pixar messing with what is pretty much a perfect trilogy, but it’s not like they’re handing the reigns to someone over in Disney Toon studios or whatever it’s called these days.
Toy Story 4 is set to release sometime in June, 2017.
I apologize if memory of the past movies elude me, but I thought Jessie was going to be Woody’s ‘love interest’ ?

They’re more like brother and sister resulting from the body language in toy story 2. Stinky Pete is Woody’s dad so, it looks like Jessie is either Woody’s sister or some kind of close friend resulting from the fact that they’re toys from the same series. Anyway now it’s clear that Jessie warmed up to Buzz and Woody has a crush on Bo Peep
Jessie is Buzz’s love interest.
I don’t know how I feel about a Toy Story 4. Seems a trilogy is a good round number. And the closure with Andy’s growth.
The various shorts released have been enjoyable. Can’t that kind of thing be enough?
Pixar does have a good track record with Toy Story, of course. But not always a good track record with unnecessary sequels.
I feel the exact same way.
Yeah. Cars was my childhood favorite up until I saw The Good Dinosaur. But then it took a bad turn and crashed. #puns4life. I was so sad to see the sweet story and message of cars go into a dark, inappropriate and immature sequel. Overall good end, but I wouldn’t let little Timmy watch that and then tell his friends to stop using alinoll and cameras that kill.
Bo Peep will show up in Toy Story 4?
This means one of three things will happen
1. Bo Peep will somehow return to Woody and the gang at Bonnie’s house with a lot of reasoning to do.
2. This will actually be a prequel to Toy Story 3 (One that is needed an 11 year gap)
3. It will be a DIFFERENT Bo Peep that Woody somehow managed to love, but the new one won’t remember at all.
Numbah 2 seems reasonable than the rest.

I am so excited about this! I knew Toy Story 4 was a love story, and I knew Bo and Woody had a relationship, but I never thought that those two things could be connected.
Well, obviously I did, but I never really believed it. I mean, Bo got smashed, didn’t she? And even if she didn’t, she was still gone, right?
Oh, crud this is big news! I am so looking forward to Toy Story 4! In fact, the only bad thing from this is that Jon’s theory will be wrong. She can’t have smashed if she’s in the movie, can she?
It could be a completely different Bo Peep, or maybe someone rebuilt her, maybe Al, maybe someone else.
I miss the Pixar Detective.
Oh cool! I have full faith that they will do a great job with this one. Tbh I’m excited to have another Toy Story film more than anything else. What do you predict?

I think Pixar might’ve felt bad about pushing Bo aside in 3 without much of an explanation, just an out of story reasoning (Bo probably being smashed to bits by little kids if she went with the gang to Sunnyside). It’ll be super interesting to see her back and I’m looking forward to 4. I just hope they don’t have a whole ‘saving character from captives/ect’ plot for Bo since they already went through with that with Woody in 2.

Don’t worry about being impatient. As far as anyone excited about this movie is concerned, November never comes.
But seriously, I cannot believe they’re back Bo! I always thought she was sold or broken, and unless this is a prequel, I don’t see how they’re going to pull this off. But I also do want to see Bo again, especially with Woody. He deserves that much.

Sad thing about living in Australia means waiting an amount of time just on the border of annoying for movies. We’re getting The Good Dinosaur on Boxing Day so I’m gonna hafta avoid fun sites like these. As much as I wanna see Jon’s posts I don’t wanna get spoiled, I’m really anticipating this movie, more than Inside Out. Just can’t get enough dinos man. Plus the new info from D23 got me even more excited.

Still, this is pretty cool. I wonder how they’re going to explain the fact that she wasn’t in Toy Story 3. John Lasseter himself said that they weren’t even intending to make a Toy Story 4 until a supposingly good idea came to them. In Toy Story 3, they had to say something for the audience to understand that Bo wasn’t there, and, as they weren’t intending to make another Toy Story movie, wouldn’t be there ever again.

The theory that Bo Peep was broken seemed plausible, but if Toy Story 4 will take place after Toy Story 3, and Bo Peep is returning, it seems a lot less likely that she was broken. I’m going with the yard sale theory, or that Bo Peep was somehow given away to a new owner. I know the toys went to a lot of effort to rescue Woody from Al, but Al -stole- Woody. And Andy still wanted Woody. What if Andy was willing to get rid of Bo Peep? (Even though he imagined she was Woody’s love interest, he never thought it was -real-, did he? Am I correct that he never did know that the toys were sentient?) And what if an eager young child legitimately purchased or was given Bo Peep? I think in that circumstances, although the other toys would miss her, they wouldn’t think it was okay to take her back from her new owner. A toy’s first responsibility is to its owner. So in this case, the toys would probably expect to never see Bo Peep again, but someday in the future, in Toy Story 4, Bo Peep’s new owner will also tire of her and somehow she and Woody will find each other again. That’s all I’ve got ^_^
I refuse to believe that Andy would get tired of Bo Peep. A better idea is that Andy’s MOM realized that Andy was playing with a porcelain doll, and, fearing sharp, broken pieces, sold Bo, (or donated her, or whatever) behind Andy’s back. Andy would most likely believe her if she said Bo just got lost, and would turn up again.
Your theory is a good one, it just needs tweaking.

Nope, those are two different things. The Pixar Detective is a free novel available on the right sidebar. “The Pixar Theory” is a published book that you can buy in print and as an e-book.

I’m weird with sequels I hate the idea of Toy Story 4 yet I’d love Bug’s Life 2 and Up 2.
Wasn’t Bo Peep a lamp???? I never understood how she could be alive if she wasn’t exactly designed to be played with (being a decoration, and made of fragile porcelain). I wonder if that would be explained in the 4th movie.
