Disney bought a script by writing team Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek that centers on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, the female warrior who was the main character in Disney’s 1998 animated film.
I’m not sure how I feel about this yet. On the one hand, Mulan is certainly a great story that would be served well on the big screen as a live-action adaption.
On the other hand, this will likely be closer to the Disney version of Mulan, which is a story that is completely removed from live-action Disney remakes we’ve seen so far. It’s one thing to make a live-action Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty/Maleficent. It’s another to move away from fairy tale movies and make something that is as historical as it is mythology.
It’s risky, but I would be enthralled if it turned out well. More so than anything they can come up with for their live-action Beauty and the Beast.

Mulan is my number one favorite disney characters when I was growing up so I’m very excited for the live-action version of this movie. I hope the writers will find the balance with the mythological and disney version of the story of Hua Mulan.

John, I am nothing but worried about this right now. I love Mulan too much for them to screw it up! Also, I feel like to do it justice Mulan would have to be (to some high degree) a really gritty war-story with lots of action and violence. Which sounds great, but to be honest, the two movies they have so far are about as good as the Marvel movies. i.e. they’re sufficient. But I think Mulan deserves better. (Maybe I’m just really biassed but whatever.)
I Agree (expect the marvel thing) Mulan needs to be atleast given a pg-13 rating to showcase how good it can be.
Worst case scenario: we just collectively ignore it and watch Mulan on DVD.

Disney is still impressing me with their decisions. I heard some controversy in DIsney’s live action adaptations of animation. They say that Disney should make more animated movies instead. Do you support of oppose the live action adaptations of Disney Animation?
Interesting point. I think the live actions work when they serve to show a darker reality to the tale. Although I really enjoyed Cinderalla for it’s visual appeal from the set and costume design
No, not in the long term. These movies are less risky, and I’m fine with Disney being more selective with original movies they push out. Look at DreamWorks for example. What got them in trouble was the practice of putting out anything that seemed like a good idea at the time.
It will be interesting to see how it works out, but I loved the story so much that no matter the reviews or end result, I’ll see it in the movie theater. I do think that Disney has (so far) been fairly careful with their live action versions of fairytales. I’m hoping they continue that trend in their work with the new Mulan.
Im not sure how I feel about this, if done right it could be really good. I would like to see Disney put out some new stuff though. They have released Malificiant which was nice as a different view point of the tale, Cinderella based of their animated version, they are doing Beauty and the Beast and now Mulan? I would rather see some new stuff, animation or live action. I don’t really want to watch something they have already produced before.
I agree, I would rather see Disney come up with new ideas as well.
The new stuff comes a lot slower because they’re riskier and take longer to make. Hence we still get Big Hero 6, Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph, etc. I’m OK with movies like this because they pay the bills for new, more exciting projects.
Are there really a substantial group of people clamoring for live action versions of cartoons? A re-release seems like it would appeal to older generations for the nostalgia factor and then new generations who have yet to see them.
