Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.
The movie just started production today, and this is apparently the direction it’s headed in. Honestly, I find the story vastly more intriguing since it focuses on lesser-known pirate lore (unlike the Blackbeard-infested blockbuster from 2011). I’m actually intrigued to see how Disney handles the film as Johnny Depp becomes increasingly more stagnant as a box office draw.
Also, the film is pulling in some great names, including Skyfall‘s Javier Bardem and “Skins” star Kaya Scodelario, who you saw (sort of) in The Maze Runner. That’s not even mentioning that Geoffrey Rush (Barbossa), Kevin R. McNally (Gibbs), and Stephen Graham (Scrum) will be reprising their roles.
Color me hopeful.
You had me at Javier Bardem.
He had me at Captain Jack Sparrow.
Well, I still haven’t seen the fourth installment, but this new premise and cast sounds great.
I mean, you can pretty much skip “On Stranger Tides.” Or just read the plot on Wikipedia if you’re curious. It’s not really worth much more than that.

Isn’t Jack Sparrow always down on his luck? “Even more strongly”? Haven’t we already seen “deadly ghost pirates” in the first one? The “terrifying” as opposed to the sweet-like-honey? Also, does this mean we are going to see another over-the-top sea god like the so wonderfully executed Calypso? Color me skeptical. Lastly, the synopsis mirrors the quality of my 7th graders’ writings.
Anything’s an improvement over Preacher/Killer-mermaid romance.
That may be true in most cases, but then Lone Ranger happened. As much as I want to see Bardem be a villian again (he was great in Skyfall), the fifth movie has never had a strong history, e.g. Seed of Chucky, Halloween 5, Rocky 5.
That being said, I really want to look back and say “Man, thank goodness this movie worked and Pirates can end on a high note.” (That is unless they decide to make more of them if number five does hit.)
