worst star wars movie

Everyone pretty much agrees that Empire Strikes Back is objectively the best of the franchise, but which one is the worst? Maria’s pick might surprise you…

Stick around for Movie Releases, where we talk about this weekend’s new movies and which ones look the most promising. And we also talk about Selma, the Martin Luther King Jr. biopic that just came out, as well as the new Ant-man trailer that came out last week.

Question of the Week:

Which Star Wars movie is your least favorite and why?

  1. I love the Star Wars franchise so much (though I don’t think they needed to go back and “remaster” 4, 5, and 6). I think most people who grew up in the 80’s would agree that 1, 2, and 3 were the weak points of the series. My least favorite would have to be episode 2, Attack of the Clones, because of the ridiculous yoda fight scene. Now, to be clear, I love yoda. He is one of my favorite characters. 🙂 But the fight scene in that movie was so ridiculous that it made me laugh in the theater…alas, I’m sure that wasn’t the reaction they were going for.

    • And that’s not even mentioning how blah the fight was before Yoda showed up. Just awful.

  2. Great podcast guys!

I’d have to say for me, Phantom Menace was the most boring of the prequels. Plus it was the only one I saw that I actually had high expectations for.

  3. I loved the prequels too when I was growing up. I totally get what you’re saying about how they were marketing more toward kids, but even then, I would have picked Episode II as the most boring of the lot.

Maria, why the Revenge of the Sith hate????

    • I was thinking the same thing. I fondly remember Revenge of the Sith as being the best of the prequels.

    • I think I was sadden by how it all ended. I feel like it is supposed to be a very tragic thing, ‘The One’ turning to the Dark Side, killing the Jedis and breaking his love’s heart. And it all felt so cartoonish and emotionless. I was hoping for something more. 🙁

  4. Episode II is absolutely the worst, by far. Limp script, no real protagonist, and there’s no character development, whatsoever. I could overlook all of the irrelevant subplots, the ridiculous Yoda duel, gratuitous CGI, and terrible acting IF Lucas had at least tried to build the relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin and show some character development, especially in Anakin’s case.

In “A New Hope,” Obi-Wan tells Luke what a good Jedi his father was, what a good friend he was, and that he was a pretty noble guy. In Episode I, Anakin is a kid (and the movie isn’t really even about him), so we have no clue what he’s actually like. When we skip forward to Episode II, he’s a strong-willed teenager who openly disrespects Obi-Wan and his other authority figures, talks poorly about Obi-Wan behind his back (multiple times), becomes entangled in a forbidden romance, AND he murders an entire community of people in anger, including women and children. He’s a huge jerk. To top it off, he and Obi-Wan are separated for almost the entire film, so we get no real insight into their friendship or master-apprenitce relationship. When we skip ahead to Episode III, and it’s basically the same thing, with Anakin and Obi-Wan separated for most of the movie, except you get to see Anakin fall to the dark side, becoming Darth Vader.

Episode II was probably the most important movie of the series to get right, because the tragic fall of Anakin Skywalker, the good and honorable Jedi, to Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith, is completely contingent on Anakin Skywalker actually being a good guy who is tempted into betraying those closest to him and putting himself on a seemingly-irreversible path towards darkness. Instead, Episode II portrays him as an impulsive, emotional, and rebellious Jedi, and you’re not really that surprised that he eventually gives in to his desires and ends up falling. It strips his conversion to a Sith of any sense of tragedy, because you pretty much expect the guy to just do whatever he feels like. Episode II is the worst of the prequels because it completely drops the ball when it comes to effectively characterizing the saga’s main character, and the rest of the story is noticeably worse for it.

And I agree that Episode I is probably the best prequel, because it was actually shot in a standard film format, instead of digital, doesn’t feel like a space soap opera, and actually exhibits some creative camera work from time to time. And Darth Maul was badass.

    • episode II was one of the coolest episodes, because you got to see all the Jedi formed to gether and fighting evil! One of the AWESOMEST scene s of star wars EVER!!

    • In the episode “Attack of the clones” Anakin also says how ob1 Kenobi is like a father to him and hes very gratefull to have him, he evn tells ob1! and in the beginning of the third episode Anakin and ob1 are lie brothers or best friends!

  5. In my opinion, which is an incredible one, most of you are horribly incorrect and your comments make no sense. It is obvious where I am coming from here, you people must not really watch and completely enjoy the movies. Jon, really? You think the Empire Strikes Back is the best movie? I disliked that movie for one (by one I mean a million) reasons why.
    1. Completely obvious moments
    2. Terrible Action
    3. Han Solo being put in the carbonite instead of Leia
Now I also agree with Jackson Evans that Number Two is a horrible movie, and I also think think that Number Four is boring.

Number 1 and 6 are the most kick donkey (sorry don’t say bad words) movies that George Lucas made. Except why couldn’t they have just used an animated Rancor, it looked horrible on the screen. Darth Mall is pretty kick donkey, except when he gets cut in half. Obi- Wan is not a magician, how you supposed to get him
    back together.
I AM TICKED ABOUT THE NEW STAR WARS MOVIE, THEY ALREADY RUINED THE ORIGINAL WITH NUMBERS 1 2 3 NOW DISNEY IS GOING TO DO SOME STUPID WASTE OF MY TWO HOURS!

  6. Also I hate Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamal, they are both drunks and actors

    • Why would you hate someone you don’t even know?

Also, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill are national treasures.

  7. I love every single episode of star wars! It’s a great movie! But, I can’t believe Disney is taking over!!! I just wish George Lucas would make it! No matter how much ya’ll hated them so much! If you didn’t like it then why did you watch all the others! George Lucas did a great job, and you should appreciate his work!
