The Correct Order For Watching the Marvel Movies

Marvel movies

In case you want to do some binge watching leading up to the May release of Age of Ultron.

Now if you want to be incredibly inclusive and stretch out beyond the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), you could always start with Howard the Duck and then blaze through the Blade, X-Men, Spider-Man, Punisher, Daredevil, and Fantastic Four movies. Not that you would want to.

  1. I was about to bring up Spider-man…NEVERMIND.

  2. So…in the order the movies came out. Got it.

      • This is rubbish.

        The chronological order is;

        Captain America
        Agent Carter (One-Shot)
        Iron Man
        Iron Man 2
A Funny thing happened on the way to Thor’s Hammer (One-Shot)
        Thor
        The Incredible Hulk
        The Consultant (One-Shot)
        The Avengers
        Item 47 (One-Shot)
        Iron Man 3
        All Hail the King (One-Shot)
        Thor 2
        Captain America 2
        Guardians of the Galaxy
        Avengers 2

        • This isn’t the Chronological Order. This is the correct order for viewing the MCU story. You can watch it in chronological order if you like, but it’s not the order that the creators intended. They planned to jump around in time in order to properly set up these characters and the events surrounding them.

          • No I don’t agree with that at all. It is logical to watch a story on chronological order and the MCU works best viewed in this way.

        • To everyone here! As an end to all the arguments, the official timeline according to the wiki:

      • You couldn’t be more wrong.

    • I’d pretty much think so. I mean, you wouldn’t watch Batman the Dark Knight Rises before you watch the first one. Same thing with books, as in Harry Potter and The Percy Jackson series. Note: I KNOW Batman is D.C Comics, not Marvel. It was an EXAMPLE. THANK YOU

  3. You forgot Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Marvel One-shots

    • I don’t really watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Do you think it’s worth watching alongside the actual movies?

      • They are introducing lots of characters in the series (like Graviton). I’m sure some will make their way to the big screen. And of course the movies events affect directly the show (extremis, Hydra…).

        • Such a hard show to get into though. I only made it two episodes before I lost interest. By the time I decided to pick it up again, Hulu had already removed the episodes I needed to catch up. And of course Netflix is nowhere to be found.

          • You can whatch it on Brazilian Netflix. 🙂

          • Trust me, the early episodes seem really generic, but that’s because they’re letting us get to know the characters. The show gets super interesting once the team gets turned on its head. Stick with it, because it becomes really, really, good.

          • The whole season 1 is on Netflix now.

          • I watched the whole 1st season on NetFLix and was hooked. Waiting for season 2 to come to NetFlix. I absolutely hate commercials and will wait for all things to come to Netflix.

          • Yo, Jon,I was wondering what your favorite Marvel movie(s) are. Mine are Thor and Captain America, in case you were wondering. Please respond. Thanks!! (Anyone else is welcome to answer also. No one else seems to like Thor and/or C.A, and I want to know if it’s just me.)

          • Netflix has season two now, which is what turned the series around. Yeah, season one kinda sucks, but season two is pretty great. Also ties into “Inhumans”.

      • If you dont watch shield, you will be way confused as to why coulson is around in the second avengers movie when he died in the first….just saying….

      • oh you really should watch the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. it is worth the time. I watched it in 2 days. I couldn’t get enough. My wife got mad at me for taking the TV for that long.

  4. That’s just the release order, not necessarily the “correct” order, which is subjective.

Personally, I’d love to see someone cut together the movies in correct chronological order: start with scenes from Thor that are way back in time, cut to Captain America, back in WWII, then mix together the other movies so that all the scenes are correct chronologically (unless they need to be a flashback for some reason). It might be a little hard to follow, but would definitely be interesting.

    • that would be pretty awesome if done right. Similar to how Topher Grace did a supercut of the Star Wars prequels.

      • I did a supercut but the file is so big I can’t find a way to share it X.X

        • Hey John, I don’t to many people would mind if you spliced that super-cut into 2 to 2.5 hr chucks. Where the best stops would be located. I know I wouldn’t mind. We would have stop for snack and drink fill-ups and drop-offs anyway.
          Here’s hoping for a super-cut.

      • Here is a supercut order, down to the tenth of a second. It was posted about 4 months after your post.
        http://www.inquisitr.com/1721114/how-to-watch-every-marvel-movie-in-chronological-order-from-iron-man-to-guardians-of-the-galaxy/
” Putting the Marvel movies in chronological order could take a very long time, and it still would, but Mike Furth has helped considerably and taken a lot of time off of all that effort. While it would still require a lot from any Marvel fan, it’s still something that could be very fun and well worth trying out. “

        • What I’m wondering is if I were to watch 1-3 movies (that is the max of what I have time for) AGAIN just to brush up going into Age of Ultron, which would you recommend?

  5. Can someone PLEASE do this for D.C. movies? Getting real sick of the marvel obsession.

    • The only DC movies that are part of the same continuity as the upcoming film series are the recent Superman movies.

    • There is only 1 DC movie that has been released that is part of the DC Comics Shared Universe

      • Also, because it’s only one movie, it is not a shared universe (yet).

  6. hey jon (and everyone), concerning the “correct viewing order”, i made a cut of everything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that happens chronologically. Starting with Thor the Dark World inro, then Thor intro, then The Red Skull finds the tesseract, Steve’s mom dies and he and Bucky talk, then all of Cap 1 ~~~~all the way up to Howard the Duck’s cameo in GOTG!

  7. What about the X-men? I’m sure they must fit in there somewhere…

    • The X-men film series is separate to the MCU, marvel entertainment own the rights for Thor, Cap, the Hulk, Iron man etc., but fox own the rights for x-men. There wouldn’t be a cross-over unless marvel and fox came to an agreement, which might be possible one day, I mean, just look at what happened with sony and Spider-man…

  8. What about the X-men?! They must fit in there somewhere…

  9. What about the Xmen? They must fit in there somewhere…

    • If you do that, you see the scene right before the Avengers several movies too early. First Avenger may be set in an earlier time, but the last few scenes aren’t.

  10. What I’m wondering is if I were to watch 1-3 movies (that is the max of what I have time for) AGAIN just to brush up going into Age of Ultron, which would you recommend?

  11. I have never seen one of the movies prior to watching The Avengers today. However, I haven’t MISSED one episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D since it began. TOTALLY hooked me (which is why I tried a movie), can’t wait to back up and watch the movies in order now! The TV version totally helped me understand the movies. Obviously the outrageous special effects and constant action aren’t there-but hey-TV! If they solved everything in 2-3 hours then what would we watch??

  12. I recently watched Iron Man 2 directly followed by The Incredible Hulk, and it seems to me that this order is a little (very little) better than the other way around. This comes from the ending scene of Hulk, where Tony Stark comes in talking about “assembling a team”, which should coincide with the events at the end of Iron Man 2. So I’d recommend these two to swap places, but since there are no real overlaps except this, it’s really just a minor thing.

  13. Iron Man
    The Incredible Hulk
    Iron Man 2
    Thor
    Marvel One-Shot: The Consultant
    Captain America: the First Avenger
Marvel One-Shot: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer
    The Avengers
    Marvel One-Shot: Item 47
    Iron Man 3
    Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter
    Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S01 E01-07
    Thor: the Dark World
Marvel One-Shot: All Hail the King
    AOS S01 E08-16
    Captain America: the Winter Soldier
    AOS S01 E17-22
    Guardians of the Galaxy
    AOS S02 E01-10
    Agent Carter S01 E01-08
    AOS S02 E11-16
    Daredevil (netflix)
    AOS S02 E17-19
    Avengers: Age of Ultron
    AOS S02 E20-22

  14. True Marvel Cinematic Timeline (movies only)
    PHASE 1
    CA: First Avenger
    Iron Man
    Iron Man 2
    The Incredible Hulk
    Thor
    The Avengers
    PHASE 2
    Iron Man 3
    Thor: Darkworld
    CA: Winter Soldier
    Guardians of the Galaxy
    Age of Ultron
(Ant Man will finish out Phase 2)
    Phase 3
Is going to be AMAZING 🙂

  15. Really you should watch half of iron man 2, stop, watch thor, and then watch the rest of iron man 2 xD

  16. The correct order of watching the Marval movies is:
    1. Figure out your favorite Marvel characters.
    2. Watch those movies.
    3. Watch all the other movies in whichever order you want.
    4. Stop obsessing over the correct order to watch the movies and WATCH THE MOVIES.

  17. Thank you Mango. I agree that people are obsessing over supers to much to often.
