The Shocking Truth Behind ‘Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends’

foster's home for imaginary friends theory

This theory about the classic 2000s cartoon show, Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends is easily one of my new favorite conspiracy revelations.

In case you’re unaware of the show or just forgot, “Foster’s” was a Cartoon Network show that aired from 2004 to 2009. In the world of “Foster’s,” imaginary friends can be seen by humans, not just the children who think them up. In this world, humans and imaginary friends coexist, which creates the inherent problem of what to do when children outgrow their imaginary friends.

Enter Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. Created by Madame Foster, this “Home” shelters imaginary friends who have been abandoned by their creators, and they can be adopted by new kids. Madame Foster runs the home with the help of her imaginary friend, Mr. Herriman, and her 22-year-old granddaughter, Frankie.

It was a fun show that actually becomes even more fun when you consider this theory…that Frankie was an imaginary friend as well.

The theory, courtesy of 9gag, argues that Frankie is the younger version of Madame Foster. If you look closely at the picture above, you’ll notice that Frankie’s clothing is the younger version of Madame Foster’s. The idea is that Madame Foster would have imagined a younger version of herself to manage the foster home, since Madame Foster is too old.

One of the strongest points of the theory is that Frankie never has imaginary friends of her own, nor does the show allude to that possibility. Granted, she acts and seems human, but as far as I know, no one every really questions whether or not Frankie is human.

Now, there are some counter arguments. There was one episode where Frankie actually went on a date, as seen below.

the day

For the theory to work, Frankie would have to either be unaware of the fact that she’s imaginary, or just like humans. The latter works because there have been several jokes within the series where imaginary friends have had crushes on humans.

Frankie is most likely aware of her imaginary origins due to the rule within the Foster’s universe that imaginary friends know who they are from the moment they’re thought up. Also, being imaginary would explain why Frankie is willing to work in a Foster home instead of going to college or pursuing a career. She’s stuck there because Madame Foster is her creator.

But there’s another counter argument…

Why would an imaginary friend need a driver’s license?

Here comes my own theory that answers that very question. What if Frankie was the person who imagined Madame Foster?

It’s possible that Madame Foster could have passed away due to old age, and Frankie (who would be heartbroken) may have imagined Madame Foster to prevent anyone from finding out.

It would explain why Madame Foster is so energetic and childlike, despite being so old. Frankie simply can’t deal with the fact that her grandmother is gone, and that would also explain why Frankie can’t move on from her life at Foster’s. The home actually belongs to her.

  1. I am really very amazing to see it

  2. Didn’t Madam Foster have an Imaginary Friend?

    • Yes, the rabbit who ran the home with them was hinted to me Madame Foster’s imaginary friend.

      • Not just hinted. At the end of season 1 episode 3 “missing blood part 3” it is directly stated that the rabbit is Madame Foster’s imaginary friend.

  3. Old post but the second theory where Madame Foster is imagined could be true as on Season 1 episode 3 there’s a part where she sees mac and says something along the lines of “Wow I haven’t seen such a fine imagination since… me!”

    • I think she meant on his creation because bloo and haraiman are the only sophisticated imaginary friends who truly think and act for themselves instead of following their kid around. They have their own personalities and not a made up or exact one of their creators because they weren’t exactly created out of need. In the episode Where their original creators get to visit them you get to see the background on why they were created

  4. Weren’t the scribbles thought up by Frankie…?

    • No those are thought up by babies so technically one of those was her first imaginary friend

    • Here you can find Foster’s House of Make-Believe Friends. Madame Foster’s “Home” is a safe haven for youngsters’ imaginary pals who drift hunters have been abandoned by their original owners. Frankie, Madame Foster’s 22-year-old granddaughter, and Mr. Herriman, an imaginary acquaintance, administer the house.

  5. This theory makes no sense what so ever. Frankie isn’t imaginary because we’ve seen her have flash backs to when she was younger especially when she wears the same green dress every year for the annual picture day at fosters. She also mentions on her dinner date how she went to college and graduated (I’m guessing in hotel management/hospitality) which is why the guy asks her if her job is running fosters and she gets shy because her job is nothing to what she studied for she’s “stuck” at fosters because she wants to help her grandmother and loves imaginary friends because that’s the world she grew up in.
Madame fosters can’t be imaginary either because she created her own imaginary friend Mr Hareiman And bloo himself has complained multiple times to Mac about needing him to imagine up friends for bloo just like in the episode of when Eduardo gets fleas and bloo asks Mac to imagine up fleas for him meaning imaginary friends can’t imagine up more friends. And it’s also stated how fosters made the home because kids grow up and leave their imaginary friends but she’s never grown tired of her silly rabbit “episode where bloo and Mac record mr hareiman dancing and singing to fosters “sweet little girl” song” which also implies that she was once a young girl.
I’m assuming Frankie never imagined up a friend because 1 she had mr hareiman and 2 once she was old enough to come up with an idea she didn’t need one because fosters was already taking in imaginary friends so she simply had all these imaginary friends to play with.
If anything tho if she did imagine up any friends she would actually have quite a few of them like the imaginary friends that never leave and are used around the house like the oven, the mop and bucket, the one that counts the votes every election year for house president, the wall. I’m guessing these would be her friends because they never appear outside for adoption day and they are imagined to help her do the long list of chores she has to do every day.

  6. Frankie DID go to college though. In the episode you took that date picture from she mentions having graduated and having a major.

    • If I were president for Foster’s Home, I’d have only 1 rule: (about Bloo and Imaginary Man) No hating my favorites.
